The Rotary Top End Junior Golf Series

An initiative of the Rotary Club of Darwin, this program is funded by the club and administered in partnership with Golf NT. The inaugural Series commenced in August 2007 and was completed in late March 2008. The 2008 series finished in early November.

The Series is designed to allow young golfers and members from different clubs holding a current handicap to play in one competition and develop not only golfing skills, but also social interaction and other personal development skills.

At each competition, the relevant Golf Club is host for the day and representatives of the Rotary Club of Darwin are present as reviewers of the overall performance of participants. The Rotary Club is not involved in the coaching of players, but because of its ongoing role in providing and funding this unique formal opportunity for young golfers, a club member sits on the NT Golf Junior Development Committee.

The top three golfers at the end of each competition receive medals of recognition and are required to formally address those present on the day as part of the personal development aspect of participants in the Series. Points awarded at each competition are cumulative and the overall winner and place getters for the Series are announced at a special Rotary Club of Darwin meeting presentation night.

Every year, young golfing representatives are sent interstate to participate in coaching clinics and national competitions. Golf NT requires that assessments and selection are carried out for these spots, during the playing of the Rotary “Top End Junior Series” where all vying hopefuls are participating.

The involvement of the club with junior golfers commenced several years ago when we initially funded the provision of uniforms for juniors representing the Northern Territory in national competitions. Monies raised from club activities in conjunction with the Australian Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians (AGFR) and events such as the Channel 9 Golf Day in Darwin have allowed the Darwin Rotary Club to establish its Junior Golf Development Fund to ensure that the Rotary Top End Junior Golf Series has a good foundation to allow it to further develop over future years.
